The focus here is on the great outdoors: the unique temperate rainforest, the pristine beaches, and the renowned Haida culture. Sportfishing, kayaking, sight-seeing on water and land, whale watching, mountain biking and hiking are all possible.
On this self-drive exploration of Haida Gwaii, you’ll stay at the Alaska View Lodge, located along the north coast of Graham Island, between the town of Masset (approx. pop of 1,000) and Tow Hill (approx. pop of 200). It’s surrounded by the ancient rainforest of Naikoon Provincial Park, and sits right on the beach overlooking Dixon Entrance and the distant Alaskan Islands.
While staying at the Northern tip of Haida Gwaii, you can explore the surrounding towns and beaches. Masset also has an interesting and strong military history. Almost 280 soldiers were stationed in this small town between 1965 and 1995. Check out the former military buildings and housing that still exist in the community today. Visit the Dixon Entrance Maritime Museum in Masset for more information on life at sea, or go to the Port Clements Museum for a look at the history and current state of logging in the area.
Alaska View Lodge offers easy access to virtually all areas and activities throughout these mystical islands, and staff who are knowledgeable can assist you in planning your stay. While here, you can explore Haida culture and museums, go hiking or beachcombing, go wildlife and bird watching, go kayaking or take a floatplane tour.
Tour Details:
Day 1 – Prince Rupert to Masset
Start your day by boarding a BC Ferry for an seven hour journey through some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery in the world. There are 1,884 islands in Haida Gwaii, a mixture of snow-top mountains and fjords that plunge into the sea, mist-enshrouded forests and windswept sandy beaches. Two islands, Graham to the north and Morseby to the south, comprise the majority of the land mass. The ferry lands at Skidegate and drops visitors at the midpoint of the island, then you’ll then drive 100 kilometres to get to Masset. Tonight, you’ll stay at the Alaska View Lodge in a Bed and Breakfast Room.
Days 2-4 – Masset
Masset, northern gateway to Naikoon Provincial Park, and western Mile 0 of Highway 16, is located at the northern end of Graham Island, the largest of the more than 150 islands that comprise Haida Gwaii. The Village of Masset is a small fishing village. Famous celebrities and people from all over the world visit to enjoy the island for its pristine beauty. Masset is also known for its hiking trails, birdwatching, and world renowned Haida artists. You can explore the Haida Gwaii cultural centre, visit Balance Rock, take the Rose Spit hike to the very last inch of sandspit, see wild deer, or go on other outdoor adventures. You’ll continue to stay at the Alaska View Lodge in a Bed and Breakfast Room.
Day 5 – Masset to Prince Rupert
Today, you’ll make your way back to Skidegate, then board a BC Ferry for an seven-hour sailing back to Prince Rupert.
