Guided by a cultural interpreter, you’ll be introduced to the history of the village of Skedans (also known as Koona or K’uuna Llnagaay). Early fur traders named the village Skedans, which was a corruption of the Haida term Gida'nsta, meaning “From His Daughter”. This title of respect was used by children when addressing a person of high rank. Another Zodiac ride ends the trip, you can visit a local eatery for dinner before returning to the Haida House for a well-earned sleep.

After a delicious breakfast at the Haida House, we suggest to spend your day in Masset to explore the Northern part of Graham Island and visit North Beach, which is primarily sandy and stretches almost 100 km in length. During the right tides and water conditions there is a naturally formed blowhole that shoots water high into the air. You can also enjoy a boardwalk hike to the top of Tow Hill, where you can take in the views of endless beaches and the Alaskan Islands to the North. Next we recommend you continue to Old Massett, an area known for its 18 totem poles each with a unique design, story and history. Enjoy visits to local Haida Artists as well! Due to the popularity of this package, space is very limited. Please call to inquire on available dates.

*IMPORTANT: The marine excursion is not recommended for people with back or neck issues, knee or hip problems, past spinal injury or heart problems. These excursions require the ability to climb in and out of a vessel (cruiser or zodiac) on to the shore, as many ancient villages are only accessible by 'beaching' the vessel (no dock). The paths at the village sites are generally rugged and cannot accommodate wheeled walkers. We recommend walking sticks or canes for those with concerns about balance on uneven ground.

Please note that this is a self-drive package, meaning there are no transfers offered to and from the Skidegate ferry terminal.
